Among the Shadows and the Mist

Electronic work with archival piano recordings and real-time EEG data

2025

Among the Shadows and the Mist consists of three studies built from archival recordings of my earlier piano improvisations. Short fragments from these recordings are reintroduced and gradually reshaped in real-time through subtle modulation processes influenced by live brainwave activity as I listen.

Rather than composing new material, the work re-engages with memory. Previously recorded gestures are slowed, phased, or gently displaced, allowing them to accumulate into evolving textures. Brainwave fluctuations do not dictate musical outcomes directly,  but rather create slight temporal and dynamic instabilities that alter the unfolding sonic environment.

The works explore how past and present can coexist within a shared temporal field. Listening becomes both retrospective and immediate: the earlier self embedded in the recording meets the present self whose physiological state subtly reshapes it. Musical form emerges not through intervention, but through the quiet friction between recollection, attention, and lived time.
