Live improvisations for modular synthesizer, percussion, and real-time heart rate

2025

Biodata Improvisations // 2025.12.22 consists of two live studio performances in which the real-time heart rates of myself and percussionist Shinya Fujii guide the temporal framework of the music. Our physiological signals are integrated into the performance environment, subtly influencing pacing, density, and structural transition as the improvisation unfolds.

Rather than mapping heartbeats to sound in a literal or deterministic manner, the system establishes a shared temporal ground. The performers respond not only to one another’s gestures, but to fluctuating internal rhythms that remain partially outside conscious control. Musical interaction becomes layered: physical gesture, acoustic response, and physiological process coexist within the same unfolding duration.

Recorded without rehearsal or post-production editing, the performances preserve the instability and vulnerability of the moment. The resulting sound is shaped by contingency rather than design, foregrounding listening as an act of mutual attentiveness between performers and the internal rhythms that quietly sustain them.
